Finally, My finished bedroom

Wednesday, 18 March 2020

I know the world's in a strange place as I write this but I've had this post in my drafts for ages and I figured I might as well carry on posting as normal.

I'm so pleased to have finally finished my bedroom, it has taken almost six years to feel right, after many changes and configurations it is now a cosy space with lots of textures and interesting things to look at (i'll link all my bedroom posts at the end). When I'm cursing this room for it's terrible wallpaper and ripped out features, I forget how far it's come from the day we got our keys. Accessorised with a two tonne fire escape, heavy textured wallpaper and questionable lighting, it's now a long way from the dining room we inherited. This room is HUGE but awkward, a massive radiator fills one wall, a fireplace the other and then there are pillars which once held windows and a door out onto a balcony. Getting it right has taken a few years but I truly feel like this is it for now.

Originally painted all white, I changed the colour to a soft green four years ago and never looked back. When I first started decorating bright white walls were a big thing but in this space white didn't work. I love how the green provides a soft background to all the other details added around the room. The biggest regret I have here is not reinstalling the picture rails - one day I will and whilst I'm there I'd also get the walls re-skimmed. If you're starting a renovation and someone offers to add picture rails say "yes" without hesitation (this goes for skirting boards too!).

Getting the layout and furniture right was the toughest job. Originally, due to our £100 furniture budget the room was full of mis-matched pieces that made the room feel like a junk shop. With chaotic walls the room needed symmetry to ground it. I drew up a scale plan measuring all our furniture and worked out systematically where everything should go. First we bought a much needed bed (we went for this rattan bed from Time4Sleep), then matching side tables and lamps, which I placed against the far back wall. This created a cosy sleeping nook area. Which I accessorised with a piano shawl found in a charity shop and salvaged wood shelf I made a couple of years ago to house my treasures.

Last year we took the plunge and bought new matching wardrobes. I did a lot of research but found these Hastings Grey Triple Wardrobes from M&S were great value (I got them with a big bank holiday discount) and they were assembled for me. They have literally made the room, practical but also quiet and elegant - they just get on with it, no razzle, no dazzle. This is good because I have added plenty of jazz in other areas of the room.

Once the clothing area was sorted I moved onto the window area, soon after I had the wardrobes in place I found this embossed silver chest of drawers in a secondhand shop. It couldn't have been more perfect and really pulled out and harmonised the silver leaf wall. I've always been fascinated by dressing table spaces and mine is a personal mix of treasures collected on holidays, mementos from my Gran and special photos that I like to look at on a daily basis. I love that its so busy compared to the calmness of the other spaces. On it's sister wall, I have created a gallery sofa area using a sofa gifted many years ago, cheerful cushions and as many botanical prints as I've been able to find (I fully plan on adding more!). To make this area feel extra special, I splashed out on the most incredible pink spotty beni ourain moroccan rug - it is the best thing I have ever purchased.

One day I'll be able to sit on my bed, drink a cup of tea and read a book whilst enjoying the gorgeous light but until then I'll enjoy the crazy family moments this room hosts - post bath dancing, little sleepy bodies creeping in under the covers just before dawn and Saturday morning giggles when everyone relaxes knowing there is no alarm. Enjoy and stay safe. xx
