A rainy Sunday afternoon seems like a perfect time to post about fairy lights and flowers (of course). Since having children I've learnt the best way to get through the dark days of winter is to embrace rather than fight against, when the sun shines I wrap us all up open the doors and get outside for some fresh air and sunlight and when the skies are endlessly grey it's time to light all the fairy lights, nest under some blankets and pop a film on (and ideally fall asleep!)
Since December I've been trying to make my living room a little more cosy, there were some well loved/ slightly gross blankets and a mis-match of cushions that needed a refresh. I started by adding a few velvet cushions from H&M and a new blanket, for Christmas I received a a gorgeous faux fur throw and as a little treat I bought myself a sequin throw from Anthropologie. Layered up with my existing Moroccan treasures, everything shimmers in the afternoon fairy light, which makes getting up and cooking dinner a real chore. Whilst I dream of one day upgrading to cashmere blankets and and beautiful velvet throws my soft furnishings have to contend with a daily dose of sticky fingers and doubling up as soft play, these not only look good but are toddler proof too. If you're looking to layer up then I really recommend H&M for cushions and Matalan for throws, I put everything I like into a basket so I can see how all the colours work together and then edit down to what I can afford.
When it comes to flowers, having a bunch or two around the house provides endless entertainment. I love to watch the petals of ranunculus and anemones burst open, keeping them until all their petals have fallen. My sister and I took a trip to Columbia road flower market the first weekend of January and bought six different bunches, we split each bunch giving us a really generous selection of flowers that have lasted and lasted. I always like to mix up my vases, this time of year I love a heavy texture like this vintage cream one and my tiny bottle I found on the beach, I mix them with lots of cut glass candle sticks (which I buy in charity shops) and of course fairy lights. Talking of fairy lights, they provide a great source of entertainment for my little ones (although both these lights were lost to heavy hands!).
Like so many of you I'm eagerly waiting the arrival of spring but these gentle cosy days aren't so bad once you get the blanket quota right.
