Floral Friday - Out of Sync

Friday, 30 March 2012

Lunch breaks are such funny things; you either don't have one, they're tinged with office politics or they're simply not long enough. In my previous job my lunch break entailed going to Waitrose buying my bosses soup, heating it up for him (yes, really)and then being constantly interrupted by people wanting holiday forms. Where I am now lunch breaks are encouraged and I always try and take full advantage as I realise how precious that hour in the middle of the day can be. I stopped by Somerset House this week to take a look at the Out of Sync installation, its beautiful, Somerset House makes such an incredible backdrop. I find that taking just five minutes out of the office makes such a difference, it can turn a "meh" day into a good day. I'm going to make it my summer resolution to get out and about more often.

DIY - D&G Coin Earrings

Thursday, 29 March 2012

Here's a bit of razzle for what has been a beautiful Thursday. Inspired by D&G coin earrings I have put together a simple DIY which would be ideal for anyone just getting into jewellery making, the main skill you need to have is to be able to open and close jump rings. If you don't fancy something as blingy as coins look for anything that has a hole in top, I think mother of pearl discs would look quite pretty as a beachy alternative. I have put the tutorial in pictures and words below.

You'll need: Some gold chain (average size), 5mm jump rings, earring hooks and gold coins (I brought mine here via ebay)
Step 1: Cut your lengths of chain, 1x12cm 2 x 9cm per earring
Step 2: Starting in the centre of the longest chianfix your first coin using a jump ring. Working outwards fix a coin every three loops until you get to the end of the chain.
Repeat with your next piece of chain, this time spacing the coins every four loops
Repeat again with your final piece of chain, this time spacing every five loops
Step 3: Open the loop on the base of your earring hook and link on your longest chain at one end, repeat with your next two pieces of chain (four space, five space).
Step 4: Link each piece of chain back on itself and then close the earring loop at the base of the earring hook (it might be a bit fiddle-y, but persevere)
That's it your done - you're now ready to shimmy the night away. A word of warning, being, ahem, an Essex girl is see how wrong gold can go on a daily basis, these should be worn with a touch of irony.

Books by my Bed

Monday, 26 March 2012

I did something quite unheard of this weekend, I stepped away from my laptop and did other things, well mainly backcombed my hair. I actually got a chance to read a couple of the books I have been stockpiling by my bed. People keep asking me what I plan to do when all the wedding planning is over, they can't know me that well otherwise they'd know that I always have a few projects bubbling away...first up would be improving my photographic skills, my camera is pretty much attached to me but I would love to know how to make the most of it. After years of talking about it I actually want to set up an etsy shop and sell some of my jewels, this book is full useful information. I really want to do some more illustration, I started doing a few in the early days of the blog but would like to do more, this book is really inspiring. The last two books are both great too, the Diana Vreeland book is ideal for drifting off to a glamourous bygone era, of fashion and travel and the Ultimate Sewing Guide (on sale in TKMaxx) is full of useful sewing tips and guides like how to make curtains, I don't need to know right now but when I do this book has it covered. Here are the Amazon links , if you're interested.

Floral Friday - Pink

Friday, 23 March 2012

Ok, I'm back to pink - sorry! Here are some pretty blooms to get you inspired for the weekend (these are my mums). I'm looking forward to my friends fancy dress party (I have false eye lashes and everything), ticking things off  the wedding to do list and the clocks going forward, summer is back - whoop! I am also going to try and resurrect my favourite t-shirt which had a run in with some bleach using this idea, we'll see how it goes...have a good one.

DIY - Bow Tie Brooch

Wednesday, 21 March 2012

This is such an easy make it takes, like, 3 seconds. I had some bow ties kicking around that I  picked up in a charity shop a while back, all I did was chop off the bit that goes round the neck and glue on a brooch pin. I've been sprucing up all my slightly tired looking cardi's with these and other corsages I have in my collection, they're going down a treat. If you don't have a spare bow tie you can just make a bow from ribbon, use the bow from this DIY if need some help. Happy making!

A good shop: Hoss Intropia

Monday, 19 March 2012

I was pleasantly surprised to read that Hoss Intropia has opened its online store in the UK, not because I can afford to buy anything but their jewellery range is fabulous and it means I can zoom in to see how things are made without looking like a weirdo as I would if I was in store! Whilst I was having a tinker around the site I thought I would put my new photoshop skills to good use and pull a wish-list together; I always fall for pretty dresses, jewel coloured clutches and a some good tan basics - I want those boots so badly! Take a look a look...Hoss Intropia

I saw these lamps in the Evening Standard last night - how sweet? They're by Matthieu Challieres at the Conran Shop

Floral Friday

Friday, 16 March 2012

In no particular order my three favourite things are beads, holidays and travel, and I suppose this blog is a collection of all these. In an effort to get myself more organised and to celebrate my love of all things floral I am going to dedicate Fridays to flowers . Here are a few pics I took whilst on our Blogshop school trip to Columbia Road. The pots of herbs (rosemary? thyme?) really make me want to get some herbs growing this summer. I normally love feminine coloured flowers, pinks, oranges etc but I really loved these little  pots of crocuses, when I leave work in the evning the crocuses in the park have and amazing smell which to me only means one thing, summer is nearly here! I plan to get outside this weekend and have a break from my computer screen, (which will be hard as I have now become addicted to Photoshop) and see what other floral delights are out there.

Handmade - yellow ombre earrings

Wednesday, 14 March 2012

I have two new things to share today; a new layout design (I'm so proud) and two, some new jewels. I can always guarantee yellow to put me in a good mood, I do have to limit myself to one piece of yellow at a time or things get a bit out of hand.  The beads are a mix collected from various projects and the discs I brought a few years ago in Barcelona, they always remind me of the fun my friend and I had. I photographed them against some Selfridges tissue which I have to say is the best online packaging I have ever received -  I can't wait to give them a twirl this weekend.

Up in the air

Monday, 12 March 2012

I was a bit slack with blogging last week mainly because I spent the week in a panic of prepping and worrying for a photoshop course I was taking. I found out about Blogshop via one of my all time favourite bloggers Bri at DesignLoveFest. Bri and her Blogshop partner Angela run a 2 day workshop giving those with basic (or none in my case) photoshop skills a complete over-haul, you walk in knowing nothing but leave with a head brimming with ideas and knowledge (last night my ideas kept waking me up!). Both Bri and Angela are super sweet, their passion for good design and sharing what they know is what makes the class so special - I can't thank and recommend these guys enough. To prove I have learnt something, I have put a gif above, never in a million years did I think I would be able to do one of these but look here I am! I'll be practicing all my new found tricks in upcoming posts, let me know what you think.

March - Spring has sprung

Thursday, 1 March 2012

At last my least favourite months of the year have past; I have cleaned and cleared my home, had my traditional February illness and now March is here - hip hip hooray! To combat the February gloom I brought cheery flowers at any opportunity (mainly the supermarket) to make the day-to-day a little more jolly. These tulips were just about to go past their best when I took these photo's. How beautiful the petals look as sunlight shines through, I love how translucent they've become. They make me want to paint a picture...enjoy!
